View from the Balcony
I work with boards and senior executives to bring independent, experienced eyes to the risks that matter most to their business. Drawing on decades of leading complex, international projects in challenging environments, I help you ask the right questions, test key assumptions, and see the full risk picture—commercial, operational, political, and reputational. I add value by turning this analysis into clear options, practical mitigation steps, and ongoing oversight, so you can make better decisions, protect capital, and keep your strategy on track.

Geoff Quartermaine Bastin has four decades of experience leading complex agribusiness, infrastructure, and development projects across Africa, Asia and beyond, with a strong emphasis on structured project and risk management in challenging operating environments. He has managed multi-country initiatives for development finance institutions, impact investors, and private-sector clients, integrating rigorous risk assessment, mitigation, and governance into project design and execution. His work spans the full project lifecycle—from feasibility and structuring to implementation oversight and recovery—helping organisations navigate political, operational, and market risks while delivering commercially viable and developmentally impactful outcomes.
The Quartermaine family were titled landowners in Oxfordshire, with roots dating back to the Norman Conquest in 1066. Deriving from the French, "Quatre" and "Main", the name means "four hands" - the nickname of the advisor/ bodyguard to the Earl of Lincoln who took care of treasury, logistics, household and martial affairs.
